Navy Tate is an interdisciplinary artist. She graduated from McNeese State University with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and visual arts. During her time at McNeese, she was involved in group exhibitions, art walks, symposiums, and fundraisers. After her time in undergrad, she went to Arrowmont School of Arts and participated in their work study program. There she took part in three professional workshops in sculpture, wood, and puppetry. As Navy settles back at home, she will be working at the Art Factory as a teacher and studio assistant. On her free time, she aims to continue her exploration of different mediums and craft.
Artist Statement:
During my time at this residency, I plan to take a medium that is familiar to me and transform it into something unfamiliar and foreign. I will aim to push myself out of my comfort zone technically and conceptually. With being freshly out of undergrad and trying to find where I fit into the world outside of academia, it has been hard to find time for exploration in my art. It is easy to stick to what I am comfortable with and what I know people gravitate towards. This residency will allow me to ask myself the questions I have been too hesitant to ask in my day-to-day life. I hope this residency can be a catapult to a new body of work and a journey that I have been waiting to start.
