Jeri Grotberg / Janice Salminen

Top Wing (2), 2025/2025
Cotton yarn, Daylily cordage
Crochet, rope-making

Adapted to crochet from a 1956 Fish and Wildlife Service leaflet for making a trawl net. After customizing the crochet pattern for each trawl net section, Jeri and Janice were tasked with fabricating the “top wing” section. Both of them are skilled and talented crochet artisans.

About Jeri: I grew up with a crafty mother and she taught me how to crochet at the age of 8. She taught me to knit a couple of years later but it didn’t stick until I was 20. I didn’t start teaching and designing until I started working at Darn Knit Anyway in 2022 so it was just a hobby until then, although it still doesn’t feel like work most days. I also dabble in many other crafts—cross stitch, needlepoint, and sewing. If it has fabric or fiber involved I’ve either tried it or want to (weaving and spinning are on an eventual list but adding more crafts currently is not in the schedule!).

About Janice: Janice Vea Garabedian Salminen was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. She came to Minnesota in the 1970’s and lived in Northern Minnesota on the Iron Range before moving to the Twin Cities area. She is married, raised two boys, worked in the Minnesota School Special Educational Department before retiring. She likes to be on adventures, to hike, to be on the waterways, and she has always liked needle work but enjoys creating with what is around her. She loves yarn and thread creations. Her grandmother Garabedian did Armenian lace work and introduced Janice to crocheting. Mrs. Eck, her next door neighbor as a teenager, taught Janice to knit. She especially likes crocheting because of the rhythm of hook in her hand! Janice has busy hands.
